There are two different passwords in play, and it is worth being clear about which one you are changing.
- The client area password signs you in here, to invoices, tickets and services. It is changed under Account → Security.
- A service password signs you in to the thing you bought: cPanel, the server, the game panel. It is changed on that service's own page.
Changing one does not change the other, and that is deliberate: your client area account may have several services under it, each with its own credentials.
Changing a service password
- Open Services and click the service.
- Find the login details card and press Change password.
- Enter the new password twice and confirm.
The change is sent straight to the platform the service runs on, so it takes effect immediately. For a hosting account that means cPanel, FTP and any other access that uses the cPanel user; for a server it means the administrative account you log in with.
Choosing the password
Hosting and server passwords are attacked constantly and automatically, so they are not the place for something memorable. Use a long random string from a password manager. If you administer a server, the better move is to add an SSH key and then stop accepting passwords at all.
If the button is not there
- The service is not Active. A pending or suspended service cannot have its password changed until it is running again.
- The platform does not offer it. A few services are managed entirely in their own panel, which is where the password is changed.
- You are a sub-user without the services permission. The account owner can grant it under Account → Users.
Forgotten the client area password instead?
Use the "forgot password" link on the sign-in page. The reset e-mail goes to the address on the account. If you also have two-factor authentication switched on, you will still be asked for a code after the reset. Keep your recovery codes somewhere other than the machine you are locked out of.
