Paying an invoice from account credit

Updated: 29 October 202628 views

Account credit is a balance held against your account in US dollars. It behaves like money already paid to us: it settles invoices, but it is not cash and it is not paid back out.

Where credit comes from

There is no top-up screen in the client area today. A balance appears for one of these reasons:

  • We added it (for example a balance carried across from a previous account, or a goodwill adjustment after a problem).
  • An overpayment. If an invoice was paid twice, or paid for more than it was worth, the surplus stays as credit.
  • Affiliate commission, if you take part in the affiliate programme and the commission is credited rather than paid out.

Your balance is shown on the Invoices page and on each invoice.

How it is used

Credit is applied to new invoices automatically, as long as it is in the same currency as the invoice. A renewal invoice raised against an account with enough credit is therefore settled without you doing anything, and you will see it as paid rather than waiting for payment.

Paying an existing invoice with it

  1. Open Invoices and click the unpaid invoice.
  2. Press Pay.
  3. If your credit covers the whole balance, choose to pay from credit. The invoice is settled at once: no card, no redirect, no waiting for a bank.
  4. If it covers only part, tick the option to apply credit and then pay the remainder by card. The invoice shows how much credit was applied and how much is left.

Things worth knowing

  • Credit can only pay an invoice in the same currency. Everything here is sold in US dollars, so in practice this only matters for an old balance in another currency.
  • Credit is not refundable. It is applied to what you owe us, not returned, which follows from payments being non-refundable unless we cannot deliver the service.
  • Applying credit does not change the due date. If credit covers only part of an invoice, the rest is still due on the same day and the service is still suspended if it goes unpaid.

If a balance looks wrong, open a ticket in the Billing department with the invoice number. Every movement in and out of credit is recorded and can be explained line by line.
