Managing a VPS from the client area

Updated: 29 October 202624 views

A VPS is managed from its own page in the client area. Open Services, click the VPS, and the management panel is below the login details. You do not need a separate account or a second password for it.

Overview and statistics

The overview shows the current power state, the IP addresses assigned to the machine, the operating system it was built with and the resources it is allowed. The statistics beside it are read live from the host: CPU, memory, disk and bandwidth. These are the host's own numbers, which is why they can differ slightly from what the machine reports about itself.

Power

  • Start: boot a stopped machine.
  • Stop: ask the operating system to shut down cleanly.
  • Restart: a normal reboot.

Use a clean shutdown wherever you can. A forced stop is the equivalent of pulling the plug, and a filesystem does not always enjoy it.

Console

The console opens a screen onto the machine in your browser, as though you were standing at it. It does not go through SSH, so it is the way in when SSH is exactly what is broken: a firewall rule that locked you out, a network configuration that did not survive a reboot, or a boot that stopped half-way. It is also where you can watch the machine boot.

Backups

Where your plan includes them, the backups taken of the machine are listed on the same page, with a restore button. Read this before pressing it: restoring overwrites the disk with the contents of the backup, and anything written since that backup was taken is gone. On a server that holds a database, stop the database before restoring so that the files are consistent.

Backups of the machine are not a substitute for backups of your data. Keep a copy of anything that matters somewhere other than the machine it lives on.

Rebuild

Rebuilding reinstalls the operating system from a template. Everything on the machine is erased: files, databases, configuration, users. There is no undo. It is the right tool for a machine you want to start over with, or one you have locked yourself out of beyond rescue, and the wrong tool for almost anything else. Take what you need off it first, and check you really have it.

What we do not do

These controls act on the machine from the outside. What runs inside it is yours: we do not log in to your server, patch it or configure its software. If you want a hand with something on the machine, ask on a ticket and we will tell you what we would do. The typing stays with you.
